What I’m Doing – learning how to do things on one leg
If you came into my house right now you would notice it looks a lot like a nursing home. Crutches, wheel chair and knee scooter as well as ice packs, and of course…. the centerpiece… me lying on the couch with my foot up.
The simplest things like getting dressed, moving from room to room, and carrying something as you move are so challenging! I am not a happy camper!
My heart is full as I have appreciated visits and some lovely flowers and meals from amazing friends.
Today is my first post-op appointment. It will be the first time I can see the incision from last week’s toe joint fusion. I am so anxious to let my leg breathe! Overall, I have had very little pain at the incision site. My pain has been in my leg. Not being allowed to walk on that leg, combined with the splint holding my foot in one position causes the leg muscles to just burn. It keeps me up at night. I am dying to go for a long walk up a long hill and just use my leg!!! 3 more weeks until I upgrade to a walking boot.
Crutches suck!
Crutches are painful, awkward and frustrating. I managed to injure my leg/knee the day before surgery so the knee scooter has been hit or miss. Our house is small enough that I just spend a ton of time maneuvering the thing. And I am forever running over the toe of my good foot! I have been to Costco in the wheelchair. It’s terrifying to have your foot propped up as you are pushed from behind. I struggle with trusting Jeff and there have been a few close calls. Needless to say I’m not always cheery these days…
Jeff is an amazing support as he juggles working from home and helping me. I am so thankful for that man!
Hamilton – Amazing!
Many of us have heard plenty about how amazing the play Hamilton is. And many of us have not had the opportunity to go see the play. Well, now thanks to Disney+ you can… and I did! It was amazing! It has made such a huge impression on me! If only we could all learn history like this! I am in awe of Lin-Manuel Miranda. He is the writer of the play and the lyrics of this amazing work. I don’t even have the words to describe the experience! I do know one thing, I will get to the play someday!
Watch it! Listen carefully! The music is amazing but very fast paced and full of pure gold! The choreography is amazing. Its just mind-bending to me to think how people create things like this! So entertaining and so educational!
To think this work of art came from Lin-Manuel’s reading of the biography! As I begin to read this biography I am dumbfounded at this ability!
Warning- The music will get stuck in your head!
What I’m Reading
The Woman in the Green Dress
by Tea Cooper
———-
Dueling time periods and set in Australia, a quote compared this author’s writing to Kate Morton.
It seemed to me like it took a long time to build up the story, introducing lots of characters, different time periods (late 1800s and post WWI ) and I kept thinking, let’s get on with it.
Ultimately I did enjoy the story but I found myself impatient with the end of the book instead of savoring it and not wanting to end.
4 stars
Wave
by Sonali Deraniyagala
———-
This true story is from 2004 at a beach resort on the coast of Sri Lanka.
It is the story of survival in the face of unimaginable loss.
The book opens with her description of the Tsunami and what happened to her and her family in riveting, vivid detail.
It is a very sad book.
I am drawn to survival stories. I always have been. While I give this book 5 stars, it is not an uplifting book. It is brutally honest about her grief and what losing everything did to her and how she processed it for the following 6 years.
Alexander Hamilton
by Ron Chernow
———-
This is a beast of a book and I suspect I will be reading it for a few months.
I was inspired to read it after seeing Hamilton thanks to Disney+.
I have always loved biographies. My earliest library memories are of checking out biographies at the school library while in elementary school .
I am only 28 pages into this 731 page beast but I am enjoying it!
