In the last week I have experienced humidity and 97 degrees while in Texas and now this week a record breaking April snow storm here at home!
April Snow!
Nothing is normal anymore. Have you noticed that? What a difference in just a few days! The biggest snow of the season hits us April 11. Only days after our warmest day of the year! Thursday We had our first picnic out in the garden and couldn’t believe how warm it was! Monday I was in the garden wondering if it was better to leave my veggie starts buried in snow or should I dig the poor babies out? I was also very worried about my cherry tree and if it would break (thankfully it didn’t).
The tree damage could have been much worse but it was still heartbreaking. After moving here in January I had really enjoyed watching as the bare trees slowly showed who they are. We had two 40ft tall flowering pear trees that were so symmetrical. They bloomed beautifully this Spring. Now there is only one. We also had a huge section of our Curly Willow break off.
I did unbury my peonies and then shook the snow off my lilacs and roses. We tried to knock the heavy wet snow of as many branches and blossoms as we could reach. For the first time in my life I kept thinking STOP SNOWING!
I was lamenting on social media that I was planning on promoting Spring sessions this week. Someone suggested I might try offering Christmas minis! Hilarious!
Shelly Fry Photography – Studio Update
Backdrops are something I use in the studio a lot. I have the wooden wall which is great and many clients choose to use it. However, I do need lots of options so having a wall system for my backdrops has been on my mind since before moving in. A wall mount system makes storing and using these backdrops much more efficient. As I shopped on line I was dismayed by the limited options. Not only were they limited but the reviews complained of cheap parts. Many commented that their system broke shortly after using it. Why would I spend hundreds of dollars on something that would just break? So we came up with a plan and this past weekend it became a reality! I’m pretty excited about it!
Girls Trip to Austin, TX
Last week Becky and I headed South. Way South to Austin, TX. Our primary goal was to visit the Magnolia Silos Marketplace in Waco, TX. It was a fun trip which included some humidity, heat, wind, getting lost, wandering, eating, laughing, shopping and just having a great time!
When we travel we enjoy just making most of it up as we go along. As a result we pack our days in with a wide variety of sights and experiences. Takeaways from this trip –
- Texas drivers are AGGRESSIVE – and I’m no pansy on the road
- Dr. Pepper began in Waco, TX
- What 97 degrees feels like in April
- I was inspired by a teepee built in the garden area at the Silos – I will have one in my garden very soon!
- I loved have everyone smiled at you as you walked along. They truly are friendly in Texas.
- I have missed traveling very much!
Garden Teepee
While we were at Magnolia one of the things that really caught my eye was a Teepee in the corner of their garden. I knew as soon as I saw it that I wanted to build one in our garden back home. So in an effort to make lemonade out of lemons my poor broken pear tree was cut up this week and we collected the foundation for my own version of it! I am super excited to have started this project!
Hamilton!
Today Thursday I am taking the day of and going to see Hamilton!! I am so excited! I have watched the play on TV 3 times and I’ve read Ron Chernow’s book Hamilton which inspired the play. We grabbed some tickets as soon as they went on sale many months ago. It’s finally here! Hooray!
Thanks for stopping by!
