w to Choose a Photographer
This month has been a blur. Like most people I am trying to cram it all in while trying to savor everything I love about this time of year. It turns out cramming and savoring don’t really go together well…
I have had several mini sessions this month. I will share those images in my next post. Today I’m sharing some personal photos and sharing how I went about finding a photographer. It’s an investment and I wanted to make sure I loved my images.
Maui with the Fry team
Oh man! It was a dream come true for the 6 of us to be able to vacation together in Maui. We had the best time! There was snorkeling, boogie boarding, eating, reading, zip lining, sunset viewing, whale sightings and picture taking. One thing I did was hire a photographer to take family pictures while we were there. I quickly discovered that photographers in that area offer two times of day for their sessions. Sunrise or sunset. While sunset sounds like a good idea they did warn the trade winds kick in so you should factor that into the decision. Sunrise is not only a calmer time of day but you also have the beach to yourself. So 3 days after arriving in Hawaii all six of us where on the beach at 7am looking our very best.
It was a bit challenging for me to not only be in front of the camera but also to trust another photographer with pictures of my family. I am so glad I did! Chandler Hayven Photography took such great care of us! We absolutely love our gallery. Thanks to her gorgeous pictures and quick turn around we have pictures for our Christmas cards this year and pictures of just Jeff and I who just celebrated our 35 wedding anniversary!
I am so thankful for our family!

How do you choose a photographer?
Deciding to hire a photographer is only step one. Finding a photographer, planning what to wear and getting everyone on board would be my next challenges.
Who to hire? I began by looking on IG there is a lot of variety when it comes to photography and I know what I like. I prefer sharp images with vibrant colors and contrast that aren’t overwhelming. A photographer who had experience with posing all adults was also important to me . As I browsed I quickly saw that most of the photographers I was seeing seemed to specialize in family’s with small children. As I keep searching I came across Chandler. I liked her lighting and the colors and her location. And she had some images with families with older kids. I checked out her pricing and sent her an inquiry.
(As you scroll looking at people’s work take the time to notice what catches your eye? Why did you pause on that particular photo?)
We just slipped in! We were her final session of her season!
What to wear? As I looked through IG I noticed what other people were wearing. I choose a color pallet and sent the pictures off to the rest of the family. Having a picture as well as a general color pallet was really helpful for everyone.
Will everyone agree to meeting the photographer at 7AM at the beach? Happily they did!
Merry Christmas!
My wish for you and your family is that you have a lovely holiday filled with things that make you smile! I hope you have the opportunity to feel loved, eat yummy food and laugh with friends and family! I know this can be a stressful time of year where family dynamics, finances and cramming in too much can just be overwhelming! Take a deep breathe, focus on who or what makes you feel loved and have a Merry Christmas!
Thanks for stopping by,
Shelly
