Winter Photography – Shelly Fry Photography

This month I have been sharing about the possibilities found with Winter Photography.  If you missed those earlier posts you can find them here https://shellyfryphotography.com/blog

Today I am going to fill in the details of why, where, when and how. Because sometimes the family is only together in January and it’s cold and wet outside –  but this is your only chance for family photos. Or because life is too crazy in the Summer and Fall months and the winter is the best time for you. Or maybe you are one of those wonderous individuals who just love the colder months. Regardless your reasons, sometimes those pictures have to take place in the cold months.

Winter Photography – Why?

These cousins were together for a short time. They live in the UK and WA state. It was rainy but we got some fantastic shots!

The first question I ask is why are you looking for a photographer? You must have something specific in mind. A graduate? A new family member? A celebration? It’s just been way to long and now is the time?

I believe the ultimate why is because something is happening that you would like to be able to remember for years to come. Photography offers a vivid way for us to remember the people and the specific events of our lives.

Knowing why you are looking for a photographer helps me plan a session that is designed for you. Some may believe that all photography sessions are the same. There certainly are many similarities, however each session is unique.

The fun is in the details.

Winter Photography – Where?

One of my favorite questions is where should we have your session? This is where I want to factor in your personalities, interests and style.

For some it’s important to keep it easy. Close to home or even sometimes at their homes. For others they welcome the opportunity to choose locations with backgrounds which will add a specific dynamic to their photos.

It was FREEZING for this stunning shoot in the Gorge. We kept blankets and umbrellas nearby. She did an amazing job not looking cold!

I’m not going to lie. I get pretty excited when the opportunities arrives to photograph people in unique locations. We are blessed living in an area where there is a wide variety within a relatively short distance.  The list of opportunities is endless.  For example you could want  snow, urban, country, gorge, ocean beaches, rivers, waterfalls, unique landmarks, to name a few.

Winter Photography – When?

There are definitely high seasons in photography. Fall is the most popular. But I have had several opportunities to photograph outdoor sessions in all our seasons, including Winter. Beautiful pictures can be taken year round. There can be challenging weather windows to navigate at times but they don’t last forever.

Often times Seniors aren’t able to get their photos done in the Fall. Winter Senior sessions are dramatic and I love them!

Winter Photography – How?

Sessions in an urban environment really help when it’s rainy. With the help of overhangs, entryways and umbrellas some really fun looks are created.

With one phone call, text or email you can begin the process. I will help you with every step of this process. We will discuss why you are looking for a photographer, discuss location options, scheduling, what to wear etc. And yes, I will absolutely give you guidance on what to do with your hands during your session.

For twelve years I’ve helped people plan their sessions. I have a huge passion for what I do and I love helping you enjoy every part of it.

Psst – We have a lovely dry streak of Winter weather right now and space on my calendar!

Thanks for stopping by,

Shelly
